Discovering new new media and more

Social Media > Jobs

As I was browsing my daily news yesterday, I came across an interesting article on inforum.com.  It was titled Employers ask job seekers for Facebook info.  In a nutshell, it was about a man who was asked in a job interview to hand over his login information for his Facebook page.  The man refused saying it was a violation of his privacy.  However, the article brings up a dilemma.  What is more important our right to keep our social media pages private or a job?

I think it’s a question each of us need to answer.   I’ve been told already that before going on my career search, I need to terminate my Facebook profile.  I try to keep my Facebook profile pretty clean.  In fact, I find myself straying away from putting too much information on the page.  Yet, a lost party photo or inappropriate joke from my friend on my wall could be all the difference.  More and more social media is utilized to scan job applicants.  It’s something very relevant to our generation.

I found the article was very interesting, and resurrected a question I’ve thought about before.  I think in the end, we just need to be more conscious of how we are using social media.  Thoughts?
